  • Great forIntimate, private ceremonies; cocktail receptions
The restored white 1930s farmhouse at Modern Country Estate, with its wide verandah, manicured lawn and curved driveway

A private, boutique country estate on Shepparton’s eastern edge: a beautifully restored 1930s white farmhouse, two acres of manicured gardens and a driveway lined with ornamental pear trees. It’s made for intimate ceremonies – the kind where the setting feels exclusive, the guest list is precious and every detail is yours.

Cocktail receptions are possible on site, and there are a few exciting things in the works in the wedding space, so it’s well worth enquiring. If you want a ceremony with a high-end, private feel that’s more within reach than you might expect, put this one at the top of your list.

Good to know

  • Private and boutique – ideal for intimate weddings and elopements.
  • Cocktail receptions are possible, so ask what can be arranged for after the ceremony.
  • You bring your own vision to life with your choice of stylist and set-up.
  • The pear-lined driveway makes a beautiful arrival – talk to your photographer about using it.

For a garden ceremony like this, I’ll help you work out where guests stand or sit, and my PA means everyone hears you clearly – breeze and all.

Just south of Shepparton on the Goulburn Valley Highway, Olivehouse sits among the mature olive trees of Greendale Grove. It offers three distinct ceremony spaces: The Grove, its signature outdoor spot framed by white barn doors; The Arbour, an English-inspired arbour in a manicured garden; and The Barn, with timber detailing and vines for a vintage feel.

Olivehouse offers ceremony-only weddings followed by a beautiful cocktail hour overlooking the grove – a gorgeous way to celebrate properly while saving on the cost of a full reception. It also suits couples who want the ceremony to be a real occasion before heading to a reception elsewhere. There’s an olive shop on site, too.

Good to know

  • Three very different looks on one property – walk all three before you choose.
  • Ask about wet-weather arrangements and exactly what each package includes, as these aren’t detailed online.
  • Golden-hour ceremonies are a highlight here, so plan your timing with your photographer.

That’s me in front of the white barn doors. Ceremony-only packages put the ceremony front and centre – exactly where a personal script, and a celebrant who brings the guests in, makes the difference.

The Woolshed at Emerald Bank

  • WhereKialla · 7719 Goulburn Valley Hwy
  • From SheppartonAbout 10 minutes (7 km)
  • SettingLakeside, bushland, reception hall
  • Great forCeremony and reception in one place; bigger guest lists

Calling itself Shepparton’s boutique lakeside venue, The Woolshed sits at Emerald Bank in Kialla, about ten minutes from town, surrounded by water, bushland and big open skies. Ceremonies can happen outdoors by the lake, beneath the gum trees, or in an indoor space with sweeping views.

The reception hall seats up to 200 guests (or 250 cocktail-style) and is designed to be styled your way, from modern and minimal to rustic or glamorous. It’s a practical choice if you want ceremony and reception in one place, and there’s a dedicated wedding coordinator to help you plan.

Good to know

  • Ceremony and reception on one site, so there’s no guest transport to organise.
  • The indoor ceremony space with views is a built-in plan B.
  • Need a stylist? Shout out to Table & Delights, a great decorator who lives locally.
  • Wedding packages can be downloaded from the venue’s website.

With up to 200 guests, sound matters. I bring a professional PA and mic so a lakeside breeze never steals your vows.

Mitchelton sits on the banks of the Goulburn River at Nagambie, about 50 minutes south of Shepparton. You can say your vows on the River Deck or, for something more atmospheric, down in the underground Cellar – which also means you’re covered rain or shine.

Receptions are held in the Montage Room or the more intimate Sundown Room. With the 58-room Mitchelton Hotel, a day spa, a restaurant and a café on site, it’s easy to turn the wedding into a whole weekend, and exclusive hotel buyouts are available for multi-day celebrations.

A special place for me. In the early 2000s, my grandfather painted Mitchelton’s famous tower building – and ended up on the front page of the Herald Sun. Whenever I marry a couple here, I think of him – it’s one of the places I feel most at home doing what I do.

Good to know

  • Accommodation on site is a big plus if lots of guests are travelling.
  • Two very different ceremony settings: open riverside or underground cellar.
  • Room capacities aren’t listed online, so ask the events team for numbers.

Planning a Mitchelton wedding? Your celebrant doesn’t have to come from Melbourne – I’m based in Shepparton, travel within the Goulburn Valley is included, and this place means a lot to me.

Tucked into the hills near Seymour, The Trawool Estate looks out over the Goulburn Ranges, with expansive gardens and historic grounds. It’s around an hour from Shepparton and about 90 minutes from Melbourne, which makes it a natural meeting point for families coming from both directions.

Ceremonies can be held among the Australian bush surrounds, with receptions in the estate’s Wild Water restaurant. There are 27 hotel rooms and suites for guests, and the estate was named ABIA Best Hotel Wedding Venue in Victoria in 2022.

Good to know

  • On-site rooms are ideal for your closest people – book them early.
  • The Great Victorian Rail Trail is nearby, handy for guests making a weekend of it.
  • Ask which ceremony spots suit your guest numbers and season.

That’s me at Trawool in the rain – clear umbrellas, big smiles and a ceremony that carried on beautifully. I’ll work with you and the venue on where your ceremony sits, so your guests can see, hear and feel part of it, whatever the weather.

The Sebel Yarrawonga

  • WhereYarrawonga · 40 Silverwoods Bvd
  • From SheppartonAbout 1 hour 5 minutes (85 km)
  • SettingLakeside hotel on Lake Mulwala
  • Great forPolished hotel weddings; winter weddings

Overlooking Lake Mulwala, The Sebel Yarrawonga offers function rooms with adjoining terraces and lake views, including Elizabeth’s. It’s a little over an hour north-east of Shepparton, on the Murray.

It suits couples who want a polished hotel setting, with two- and three-course menus, drinks packages, and the option of a pre-wedding dinner or next-day gathering. The Sol Wellness Centre can put together a spa package for the wedding party, including hair and makeup.

Good to know

  • Warm indoor spaces make it a solid choice for winter weddings.
  • Ceremony locations aren’t detailed on the venue’s wedding page, so ask where ceremonies can be held.
  • Guest rooms and suites are on site.

Getting married on the Murray? Ask me about travel when you enquire – I’ll always quote it upfront.

The Paddock at Ulupna

  • WhereUlupna · 311 Ulupna Bridge Rd
  • From SheppartonAbout 50 minutes (62 km)
  • Setting180-acre bush property near the Murray
  • Great forWedding weekends with guests staying on site
Katie smiling with a microphone and ceremony book beside a timber arbour with white flowers, in front of the lagoon and river red gums at The Paddock at Ulupna

A 180-acre bush property on Ulupna Island, between Ulupna Creek and the Murray River, around 50 minutes north of Shepparton. You can marry beside the lagoon at the red gum arbour, or in an undercover ceremony area that opens toward the cabins and lagoon.

The Paddock is built around wedding weekends: exclusive use of the property, a hand-built mud-brick reception venue, and cabins that sleep up to 66 guests, plus space for camping and caravans. Food, drinks and suppliers are arranged separately, so you get a lot of freedom (and a little more planning).

Weddings here are so much fun. With so many people staying on site, nobody’s rushing off to drive home – the celebration just keeps rolling. And a little personal history: it used to be a school camp, and I went to grade 3 camp here. Coming back as a celebrant is a full-circle moment for me.

Good to know

  • The venue says it particularly suits weddings of about 50 to 150 guests.
  • You’ll book your own caterer, bar and hire, so budget time for that.
  • Exclusive use means no other wedding on the property during your stay.

That’s me at the timber arbour by the lagoon. A weekend-long wedding has its own rhythm. I’ll help you place the ceremony so it feels like the heart of the weekend, not just one item on the schedule.

The Vault

  • WhereShepparton CBD · 53–55 Fryers St
  • From SheppartonIn central Shepparton
  • SettingConverted warehouse function space
  • Great forUrban receptions and cocktail-style celebrations
  • Operated byThe Teller Collective

Tucked down a laneway in the middle of Shepparton, The Vault is a private function space inside a converted warehouse, operated by The Teller Collective. It’s the group’s largest function space, holding up to 100 guests seated or 150 cocktail-style.

If you’d rather an urban, after-dark kind of celebration – long tables, good food, great lighting – than a paddock or a garden, it’s one of the few options right in town. Weddings are among the events it hosts, and it pairs well with a ceremony somewhere else in Shepparton.

Good to know

  • Ask whether ceremonies can be held on site, or plan a ceremony nearby and bring guests over.
  • Cocktail-style capacity is higher than seated.
  • Enquiries go through The Teller Collective’s function enquiry page.

Pairing a ceremony in one place with a reception at The Vault? I’ll help you plan the timing so the move between the two feels easy.

Shepparton Golf Club

  • SettingEnclosed deck and function room overlooking the fairways
  • Great forYear-round ceremonies and receptions in one place
Katie in a green sequinned dress reading into a microphone between the couple under a draped floral arbour at Shepparton Golf Club, with the fairways behind

Easily one of the most underrated wedding venues in the region. On the banks of the Goulburn River in north-west Shepparton, the Golf Club lets you hold your ceremony out on the deck, overlooking the green fairways – and because the space can be enclosed and heated, it works beautifully even in winter. No weather contingency needed.

When the ceremony’s done, your reception is right there. Guests head straight to the bar, then into the Fairways function room, with its glass walls, sunset views and seating for up to 180 (or 200 cocktail-style). Catering is in-house, with menus and beverage packages that can be tailored, and there are 12 motel rooms overlooking the 18th fairway for guests who’d rather not drive home.

Good to know

  • Winter wedding? The enclosed, heated deck means you don’t need a plan B.
  • Ceremony and reception in one place – no transport, no gap, straight to the bar.
  • On-site motel rooms for guests, right in town.
  • You can personalise florals, table decorations and even a lolly buffet.

That’s me marrying a couple at the Golf Club, under the arbour with the fairways behind. If you want easy, warm and right in town, this place deserves far more attention than it gets.

Questions worth asking any venue

Venue visits are exciting, and it’s easy to fall for the view and forget the practical stuff. Take this list with you.

  • Where’s the wet-weather ceremony spot – and would you actually like getting married there?
  • Can the ceremony and reception be on the same site, or will guests need to travel?
  • What’s included in hire: chairs, an arbour, a signing table, power for music?
  • How many guests does each space really hold, seated and standing?
  • Is there accommodation on site or nearby for travelling guests?
  • How will guests hear an outdoor ceremony? (Good news: I bring a PA.)
  • What time is sunset on your date, and where does the light fall at that time?

Venue questions

Choosing a venue: FAQs

What are the best wedding venues in Shepparton?

It depends on the wedding you’re picturing. For ceremony and reception in one place close to town, look at The Woolshed at Emerald Bank. For a ceremony with a strong sense of place, Olivehouse, with its cocktail hour instead of a full reception. For a weekend with guests staying on site, Mitchelton, The Trawool Estate or The Paddock at Ulupna. For an in-town reception, The Vault or Shepparton Golf Club.

Can we get married somewhere that isn’t a wedding venue?

Yes. In Australia you can marry almost anywhere, as long as the legal requirements are met – a backyard, a family farm, a riverbank. You’ll need the owner’s permission for private property, and public spaces like parks may need a booking or permit from the local council.

How far ahead should we book our venue and celebrant?

Most couples I work with book 6–18 months out, and popular spring and autumn Saturdays go first. Once you have a shortlist of venues and dates, check your celebrant’s availability before you sign anything.

Do you travel to all of these venues?

Yes. Travel within the Goulburn Valley is included in my packages. For venues further afield, I’ll quote travel upfront before you book.

Do we have to use a celebrant the venue suggests?

Venues often share supplier lists, which can be really helpful, but you’re free to choose the celebrant who feels right for you.

What should we ask on a venue visit?

Start with the questions above: wet-weather plan, capacities, what’s included in hire, sound and accommodation. And stand where you’d actually say your vows, at the time of day you’d say them.

Let’s do this

Found your venue? Let’s check my date.

Tell me your venue (or your shortlist) and your date. I’ll reply within 24 hours. Still deciding? That’s fine too – enquire anyway.

No date yet? Enquire anyway – tell me roughly when you’re thinking.
